This year, mine landed in Brno, the city where a piece of my family’s story began, and where I got to spend the evening surrounded by the people who know me best.

The night moved the way the best birthdays do: dinner at a table that kept growing as more family arrived, laughter that got louder with each course, a gift wrapped in ribbon that appeared just as the sun started to dip behind the rooftops. My sister Sandra ordered the most amazing cake from Zemanová Cukrárna a Kavárna, a recipe passed down from 1937, almost a hundred years old, and every bite tasted like it. We ended up at a cozy bar with a working microbrewery kettle glowing behind the counter: copper tanks, low light, the kind of backdrop that makes you want to linger a little longer than planned. Somewhere between the toasts and the group photos in the town square, I remember thinking: this is exactly how a birthday should feel, full, unrushed, and surrounded by the right people.
